Periodontal Treatment in Jupiter

Dentures in Jupiter, FL

Periodontal treatment involves diagnosing and treating gum disease and gum inflammation. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums due to bacteria and plaque buildup on your teeth. If left untreated, it will progress into periodontitis. Periodontitis is a deeper and more damaging form of inflammation resulting in bone loss and eventually tooth loss.

Teeth lost as a result of periodontitis usually have a minimal available bone for restoring with implants, bridges, or dentures. Ultimately this means, what may have been an easy fix becomes much more difficult and costly to restore the esthetics, health, and function of your teeth and gums. Your best option, therefore, is to maintain the existing gums and bone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to Expect From Periodontal Treatment?

If the measurements of your gums indicate you may need gum disease therapy often referred to as a “deep cleaning”, you will be scheduled to come back for that appointment. At that visit, one of our highly skilled dental hygienists will complete the treatment. Often times anesthesia may be provided in order to alleviate any discomfort. In areas of significant infection, an antibiotic (Arestin®) can also be placed to decrease the number of bacteria at the site.

What Should I Expect After My Visit?

It is normal to experience some sensitivity after a deep cleaning; however, this should resolve within a couple of days. If antibiotics were placed, avoid flossing that site for 10 days.

My Gums Don’t Hurt, Do I Really Need Treatment?

This is one of the most common responses we receive from patients with periodontitis.

Dr. Mautner’s response to this: “This sounds really bad, but I wish gingivitis and periodontitis were painful. No – I’m not a mean sadistic person wishing ill will on my patients. It’s just that I’ve seen countless patients who have neglected their teeth and gums. These patients are devastated when they approach me with loose teeth or receding gums, and I am forced into the uncomfortable discussion of why many of their teeth can not be saved. Trust me, I want you to keep your natural teeth!”

If these same patients could have felt the early signs of this happening they would be beating down the door to get in and receive their cleaning. Likewise, many patients experiencing a few loose teeth are afraid of what they may find out so they avoid coming in to be properly diagnosed. This only worsens the condition and makes treating it even harder.

What are Some Signs of Periodontal Disease?

There are some tell-tale signs of periodontal (gum) disease that can help you determine if you might need treatment. Some of these signs include bleeding of the gums when flossing/brushing, bad breath, pain when chewing, the sensitivity of the teeth, and receding gumline.

How is Periodontal Disease Treated?

Periodontal disease is caused by chronic inflammation. In order to treat it, the source of the inflammation is identified and removed. Usually, it is due to calculus buildup but may also be caused by food impaction or decay. A thorough dental examination can help to determine the cause of the periodontal disease and a treatment recommendation can be decided upon.
