Non-Invasive Cavity Treatment

Riverbend Family Dentistry is pleased to offer non-invasive cavity treatment, using Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF). SDF has been used for decades all over the world. It is now FDA approved with a long-standing track record of safety and effectiveness.

SDF is composed of two primary components: silver and fluoride. SDF acts as an antimicrobial agent that kills the infecting bacteria and simultaneously strengthens the underlying affected tooth structure. A liquid is applied to sites of active dental cavities. Once placed, it stops the progression of dental decay and hardens the affected site.

SDF can be used in cavity treatment for both children and adults and is an excellent alternative treatment to stop decay until the tooth can be restored.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to Expect During Cavity Treatment?

At this visit, we will start with polishing and cleaning the affected teeth. We will then simply dry and apply the SDF for 1-2 minutes. The procedure is completed with a quick application of a gel varnish over the SDF treatment to allow the material to remain a bit longer on the affected site. If the areas are between the teeth, a special floss will be utilized to carry the material into place.

What Should I Expect After My Non-Invasive Cavity Treatment Visit?

Once the tooth has been treated, we advise patients not to eat or drink for at least an hour to allow it to cure. After this, you should be able to return to eating and drinking as normal.
