Professional Cleanings and Exams in Jupiter

Riverbend Family Dentistry in Jupiter, FL

Good brushing and flossing at home is essential for maintaining a healthy smile; however, routine professional cleanings and exams are also vital to preserve healthy gums and enamel, as well as prevent more serious problems in the future.

A thorough cleaning provided by a certified dental hygienist will remove any plaque and/or calculus that has accumulated in places where a toothbrush cannot reach. These substances when not removed from your teeth can lead to gingivitis, periodontitis, and tooth decay.

During your cleaning, the dentist Jupiter will also complete a comprehensive exam and oral cancer screening to ensure that any problems or issues are caught early before they can progress into pain, further damage, or the need for costly procedures.

At your first visit to Riverbend Family Dentistry, you’ll receive our new patient experience which includes:

  • Comprehensive dental exam
  • Oral cancer screening
  • Digital x-rays and intraoral photos
  • Gum measurements (perio chart)
  • Professional cleaning
  • Oral hygiene tips and tricks

Frequently Asked Questions

What Should I Expect During a Dental Exam or Cleaning?

You will first be asked a simple question: “How can we help you today?”

We strive to make you comfortable and always go above and beyond to listen to your concerns and treatment desires. Often times many options are available and we do our best to give simple conservative options as well as comprehensive options. The choice is yours and we’re here to help.

Screening for oral cancer and other forms of pathology will be routinely done during both your initial comprehensive exam and during your routine dental hygiene visits. During these screenings, we will closely examine your neck, face, mouth, and throat for any signs of lesions or anomalies.

The new patient experience is covered by your dental insurance, or if you do not have insurance you can take advantage of our $99 new patient special.

Do I Really Need a Cleaning Every 6 Months?

Short answer, yes. Think of it like getting the oil changed in your car. While technically your car can go on without an oil change every 3,000-5,000 miles, you’re going to significantly decrease the overall life of your car if you do not do regular, routine maintenance. The same is true with your mouth. Receiving dental cleanings twice a year prevents plaque and calculus build-up that inevitably forms at the base of your teeth and between your teeth. Bacteria-based plaques and calculus that remain on your teeth for extended periods of time can result in decades of the long slow deterioration of your gum health as well as tooth decay.

Frequent cleanings are also an opportunity for us to find any small problems before they progress. A tiny cavity if found early can be a simple 10-15 minute fix and one-tenth the cost of waiting. Oftentimes, if cavities are left to progress they can approach the nerve resulting in the need for root canals, surgical procedures, and/or crowns. This is significantly more time-consuming and costly.

A note from Dr. Mautner: “From the bottom of my heart, I would much rather be telling you about a simple fix rather than multiple expensive appointments. So please, trust me and stay on top of your oral health. It’ll keep you having a beautiful smile and save you a lot of money!”

How Do I Maintain a Healthy Smile at Home?

Here are our recommendations to maintain a healthy smile in between routine dental cleaning every 6 months:

  • Brush for 2 minutes twice a day
  • Floss once daily (usually at night), prior to brushing. You may need to floss more often if food is stuck between your teeth. We oftentimes recommend a water flosser rather than conventional floss, especially if you have existing restorations (i.e. implants, crowns, or bridges).
  • Angle toothbrush at 45 degrees towards your gums and brush in round tooth length strokes.
  • Use a fluoridated toothpaste making sure to spit out all excess when finished. Do not rinse or eat for at least 30 minutes after.

Why do I Need Professional Dental Cleanings?

Brushing and flossing do a lot to remove harmful bacteria, but even with everyday oral maintenance, bacteria can still grow in hard-to-reach places. Soft bacterial plaque that is not removed hardens into calculus which is very tough to remove and can cause gum disease. Professional dental cleaning ensures that all of this bacteria that is built up over time is removed in order to prevent dental issues that require costly treatment including tooth decay and periodontal disease.

Are Dental X-Rays Necessary?

Yes. Dental exams only address what can be seen outside the teeth and gums. Dental x-rays are necessary because they can help to determine if there are any issues underneath the surface. So, they’re a helpful aspect of getting dental treatment diagnosed on time before issues are both harder and more expensive to treat.
