Teeth Whitening

It is true that some of life’s greatest pleasures such as coffee, tea, and red wine can lead to darkening or stained tooth structure. The good news is that with the help of a hydrogen peroxide-like substance, we are able to remove these stains and brighten your teeth.

At Riverbend Family Dentistry we recommend 3 tooth whitening options.

  • Over the Counter Whitening Strips: Strips such as Crest® whitening strips are a cost-effective whitening option. Strips are available online and at many local stores including CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, and Publix. You can expect to get a shade or so of whitening from this option.
  • Prescription Strength Pre-made Trays: These are similar to the cost-effective over-the-counter strips but are of higher strength. They are less expensive than the custom in-office options but still offer professional-strength improvements to your overall tooth shade. You can expect to get approximately 2 shades of whitening from this option.
  • In-office Whitening with Custom Trays: This option offers the convenience of a single in-office visit with fast results. Custom whitening trays, made specifically for your mouth, are also included with this option so that you can choose to maintain your desired tooth shade at home. These custom trays allow you to keep up with your tooth shade at your discretion. The trays come with refill material for approximately 3-4 treatments (each treatment is a 5-7 day routine). This option often results in 2-4 shades of immediate whitening with even more improvement with the at-home custom trays.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to Expect From Professional Teeth Whitening?

One of our dentists will do a quick exam to confirm you are a candidate for professional teeth whitening to make sure you have healthy gums and no active decay.

If you decide to schedule an office whitening, our team will first start by placing a protective barrier placed over your gums. This will help decrease any potential for sensitivity. Our team will then apply a peroxide gel to the top of your teeth and heat it using UV light. This will allow the peroxide gel to lift the stains off of the surface of the teeth, and after several treatments remove them completely. Impressions will also be taken for custom fit bleaching trays to be made.

What Should I Expect After My Visit?

For best results after in-office whitening, avoid darker-colored beverages such as coffee, tea, and wine for at least 24 hours.

Regardless of what whitening option you choose, you may experience some tooth/gum sensitivity. This should be resolved within a few days.

With at-home whitening, regardless if you use the pre-made trays or custom trays, we generally recommend you can whiten as often as you would like and can tolerate achieving your desired shade of white. If you develop sensitivity, reduce the frequency with which you are whitening.

Is Professional Teeth Whitening Bad For My Teeth?

No. Most modern whitening materials are a variation of hydrogen peroxide which has a long track record as being very safe and effective.

Does Professional Teeth Whitening Hurt?

No. The majority of professional teeth whitening patients say that sessions are pain-free. However, some people who experience teeth sensitivity do say that there is a slight discomfort during sessions which is temporary. Desensitizer can be placed on the teeth to aid in any discomfort.
